Formation

Formation shapes who we are over time

Discipleship is formed through repeated obedience guided by the Word of God.

Formation is not information, motivation, or activity. It is the long, quiet work God does in us as we submit ourselves to His truth day after day. While teaching is necessary, formation goes deeper. It shapes character, disciplines desire, and orders the heart toward obedience.

Scripture presents discipleship as daily and ongoing. Jesus did not call His followers to moments of inspiration, but to a life of obedience. Formation happens as God’s Word is received, practiced, and lived out within the rhythms of everyday life.

True formation requires time, consistency, and humility. It cannot be rushed without being distorted. It is shaped through repetition, correction, and submission, often in ordinary and unseen ways.

Formation is also communal. God uses the body of Christ to shape His people. Learning together, submitting to one another, and walking in accountability all contribute to growth that is lasting rather than impressive.

Sustain Discipleship approaches formation with restraint and patience.

This work affirms:

  • Scripture as the primary instrument of formation
  • Obedience as a daily discipline, not an occasional response
  • Community as the environment where formation is refined
  • Time as a necessary companion to maturity

Formation prepares people not only to begin well, but to remain faithful when obedience is costly and recognition is absent.

Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
